UMMC Insight Program Enters Fourth Year
By: Tara Brock
From the very beginning, the UMMC Insight Team understood the importance of playing the long game. As the inaugural cohorts of our program are entering their final years of college, we anticipate their progress toward potential careers in health care. While the exact number of students who successfully enroll in medical school remains to be seen, we have confidence that many of the participants in the resident-led program will go on to have successful careers in health care.
The Insight program was conceived with the aim of fostering greater representation in medicine, particularly among historically marginalized racial and ethnic communities. Welcoming students who self-identify with these groups, we started this program in July 2021.
Our program, much like medical school, offers a unique immersion into the intricacies of the gross anatomy lab. In the days that follow, students delve into the world of pathology, honing their skills in organ identification. Through simulated experiences ranging from airway breathing to suturing, facilitated by department faculty, participants gain invaluable hands-on exposure. Additionally, visits to the Simulation Center provide opportunities to engage in surgical scenarios, from scrubbing in to gowning up for surgery.
As the Insight Summer Enrichment program enters its fourth year, we look forward to working with a new cohort of students to show them all the fulfilling and rewarding possibilities that lie within choosing a career in health care.
